Mr. Clay has conducted extensive research into the health affects of mold in our indoor environments and co-authored nationally approved Certified IAQ/Mold Inspector and Remediation Training programs that use only environmentally friendly protocols and procedures.
Thomas has been involved in over 200 Healthy Building and IAQ projects over the last 8 years and has coached hundreds of families and individuals affected by sick home and sick building syndrome.
Mr. Clay became personally involved with a "Sick Home" in 1998 when the health and welfare of he and his family were at risk. Having respiratory, liver concerns and flu-like health symptoms, their doctors could offer no real medical answers after nearly a year of testing and treatment.
Finally, Thomas ask one of his doctors if his home could be making them sick. The doctor agreed that his home was one of the only possiblities left and that a thorough inspection was indeed in order.
Through his work as a business coach for national and regional HVAC companies, he became aware of mold and other indoor air quality contaminants as a possible cause of his family’s health problems.
Thomas took it upon himself to resolve the cause of his family's health problems. Over three years of research and experimentation, Thomas found 23 common problems that contributed to poor air quality in his own home including mold growing inside some of the walls from "ice damming" around the gutters.
As a professional business coach working with air conditioning and heating companies he began testing new technologies and solutions as he found out many of the more traditional mold protocols and procedures were not effective. He also realized that most homes and buildings needed a "whole house" or "whole systems" approach to indentify and resolve most indoor air quality issues.
Thomas then began incorporating new environmentally friendly technologies and solutions to help resolve his own Mold and IAQ problems in a "whole house" approach.
By the end of 2001, his health had returned to normal and he and his family began feeling and breathing better. With life experiences in IAQ and his passion for helping others, Thomas became dedicated to educating homeowners, professionals and service contractors to the real issues behind mold and other IAQ contaminants.
It is that knowledge and passion that became the foundation for the National Indoor Air Quality Institute and his involvement with the Environmental Education Foundation and now the Healthy Building Institute of America.
Thomas is an adviser and strategic training partner for the Environmental Education Foundation. He is also an adviser to the EPA for the establishment of new national Indoor Air Quality standards. Today, Thomas continues coaching and training contractors through the Institute, researches and field tests new Healthy Building technologies and develops new certified training programs for the industry.
