Dry Ice Blasting Proves
Positive Results in Mold Remediation

In our continued effort to research and develop the most up-to-date and effective mold remediation products, technologies and methods available, The Healthy Building Institute of America has completed preliminary testing on dry ice blasting.
HBIA, in cooperation with several independent parties, conducted field tests in a residential setting using dry ice blasting technology. This method, also referred as cryogenic or CO2 blasting, was found to be a time effective alternative to sanding, wire brushing or replacement of building materials with water stains or deep seeded mold growth.

In this field test, severe mold damage had occurred in the wall studs at the baseboard of a single family home. Initial tests were performed and the results had shown a significant amount of Aspergillus niger, Penicillium and various bacteria.

The most severe area was isolated and negative pressure was created using a HEPA filtered air scrubber. Severely damaged carpeting and drywall were removed, double bagged and discarded.
Next, Scott Perkins from Alpheus, a CAE Company, wore Full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and began the cryogenic blasting on the mold damaged wood framing.
In less than 6 minutes of actual blasting time, significant improvements in the wood framing were visually apparent (see photo at right). Samples were then collected by Drew Carlson from Clayton Group Services and sent to PK Jarvis Microbiologies Laboratory for analysis.

The test results verified that less than 1% of the toxic molds found in the preliminary tests were present after only (6) six minutes of cryogenic blasting. After the final test results were reviewed, combined with in depth research and interviews with contractors using this technology, HBIA has approved dry ice blasting as a viable mold remediation tool and alternative to sanding and scraping away deep rooted mold growth and/or water stains.

While this method may not apply to all remediation projects, in some cases, dry ice blasting is an time saving alternative to sanding, scraping, removing or replacing building materials with water stains or deep seeded mold growth.
